What is sodium nitroprusside used for?

Lowering blood pressure during certain surgical procedures.

Severe heart failure.

How does sodium nitroprusside work?

Sodium nitroprusside is a type of medicine called a vasodilator. This means it widens blood vessels.

Sodium nitroprusside breaks down in the blood, releasing a chemical call nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide enters the muscle cells in the walls of the blood vessels and causes them to relax. When these muscles relax, the blood vessels widen, which lowers the pressure inside the blood vessels.

Sodium nitroprusside is used in the emergency treatment of high blood pressure (hypertensive crisis). It is also used to produce controlled hypotension (low blood pressure) in anaesthetised patients during surgery.

Sodium nitroprusside may also be used in the emergency treatment of severe heart failure. Lowering the blood pressure helps to reduce the workload of the heart.

How is sodium nitroprusside given?

Sodium nitroprusside is given by a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) under specialist medical supervision.

Sodium nitroprusside should be used with caution in
