Metronidazole is a antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication. It is used either alone or with other Antibiotics to treat pelvic inflammatory disease, endocarditis, and bacterial vaginosis among others. It is effective for dracunculiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and amebiasis. It is the drug of choice for a first episodes of mild-to-moderate clostridium difficile colitis. Metronidazole is available by mouth, as a cream, and intravenously.



Indications:

Metronidazole is the drug of choice for symtopmatic intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis as well as infections with Trichomonas vaginalis and Giardia lamblia. It is quickly and reliably effective against Gardnerella vaginosis.



Contra-indications:

Hypersensitivity to metronidazole. Safety in pregnancy and lactation has not been established.

Patients with blood dyscrasias or with active disease of the central nervous system.
